When these cartridges are used in high moisture areas, i.e.:  fog, rain, sea mist, each pulse disturbs the filter cake and allows a small “burst” of contaminant into the housing.  During these conditions since salt will dissolve into the liquid, the filters effective removal of salt from the air can be a negative value.

SINGLE STAGE BARRIER SYSTEMS

 

Many current filter house designs are for EU9 or ASHRAE 95 barrier filter systems.  The “minipleat” filter has become very popular.  The common configuration is to have a minipleat final filter with a Prefilter affixed directly to the inlet face.  While this has two filters it is still a single barrier system.  The EU9 filter has a high efficiency on .5 micron size particles, which if the turbine is in an area of a plant with a process that generates this size contaminant may be beneficial.

 

The EU9 filter is generally made of a microglass paper media.  While the media is “treated” to give it some moisture resistance, long term exposure to wetting degrades the performance.  Manufacturers test its
